Mitigating the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the Barents Region, BARIMS, 1st phase

The BARIMS project inventories key areas for biodiversity in the Barents region, or Northern Norway and Finnish and Swedish Lapland. The project also seeks ways of safeguarding the nature values and ecosystem functions of these areas as part of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The objective of the BARIMS project is to promote regional co-operation from the viewpoints of sustainability and safeguarding biodiversity in the Barents region. The project also aims to raise awareness of how climate change is affecting the region.

Key measures of the project

  • Collecting existing geospatial data on catchments and marine areas of high biodiversity value on pilot sites identified in the project.
  • Seeking ways of assessing the impact of climate change on nature values, ecosystems and natural resources use on the pilot sites.
  • Identifying key measures needed to safeguard biodiversity and livelihoods dependent on nature in the Barents region.
  • Organising a photographic exhibition to promote regional co-operation and raising awareness of the impact of climate change.
  • The project has also gathered existing information, identified potential new data sources and organised workshops and seminars that assessed how the compiled information could be used to meet the needs of land use planning and similar, and identified new information needs.

Photographic exhibition Through the eyes of the gyrfalcon

A photographic exhibition titled Through the eyes of the gyrfalcon is organised as part of the project. This exhibition brings us a bird’s-eye view of how climate change will affect nature, livelihoods and local people’s lives in the north. Both the physical and the virtual exhibition contain visually interesting works, in addition to which they are an outstanding medium for learning more about the impact of climate change on the natural environment, livelihoods and daily life in the region.

Through the eyes of the gyrfalcon is both a physical and a virtual exhibition. The physical exhibition comprises 20 photographs and their captions that provide information on the impact of climate change in the north. The exhibition will tour Finland and Sweden in 2023–2025. The venues that the exhibition will visit are also listed on the Finnish page.

The virtual exhibition can be visited by all citizens online. It explores in depth the themes of its physical counterpart. The virtual exhibition will also open later.

The exhibition is intended for pupils, teachers, students, Barents region inhabitants, authorities, researchers and all citizens interested in its themes.

The exhibition was put together by experts and researchers from Finland, Sweden and Norway. Advertising agency Laboratorio Uleåborg was in charge of producing the exhibition and the videos as well as for the technical implementation. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, and it was funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

So spread your wings like a gyrfalcon and see how climate change is impacting the north!
