Information for the participants of the research project “Bringing nature back – biodiversity-friendly nature-based solutions in cities”

You are taking part in the research project Bringing nature back – biodiversity-friendly nature-based solutions in cities (BiNatUr). This privacy notice provides information how the organizations that are a part of the project will collect, use, disclose and store your personal data in accordance with Articles 13 and 14 of the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council. Your participation in the study is voluntary and you can withdraw from the study at any point in time.

Legal basis for processing personal data

The processing of your personal data is based on the consent in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (Article 6(1)(a)).

Collected and processed personal data and purpose of processing

The following personal data will be collected by conducting interviews and workshops: names of the participants and professional titles, profession, areas of expertise, the name of the workplace, email address, audio and video recordings of interviews. The personal data will be collected directly from the participants in interviews and workshops. In addition, contact information, i.e., names and email address to reach the research participants and as well as information about and areas of expertise will be collected on the websites of organisations.

Personal data is collected and processed for the purposes of scientific research within BiNatUr project. The interview and workshop data will be processed in such a way that personally identifiable information is deleted or converted to a non-identifiable format before reporting the research results, so that the identity of the participants in the interviews and workshops cannot be identified. Collected data will not be used for other purposes such as automated decision making nor profiling.

Recipients of personal data

The researchers and other personnel working in the BiNatUr project have the right to access and process research data containing personal data of the subjects. Personal data will not be transferred to any country outside of the European Union or the European Economic Area. In addition, the personnel or service providers who transcribe audio material have access to personal data. These service providers are considered as processors of personal data and must comply Sykes’s guidelines on processing personal data.

Protection, storage and deletion of personal data

Personal data may be stored in both electronic and physical form. All organisations that process personal data in BiNatUr have taken technical and organisational measures to protect personal data and requires these measures from all the service providers used. The personal data is stored on password protected secure local network drive of the partners organisations, where only authorised project members have access to the data. The personal data and contact information collected will be kept for as long as deemed necessary to fulfil the purposes of the BiNatUr project and will be deleted thereafter, but no later than five years after the end of the project.

Data protection rights related to processing of your personal data

The purpose of this notice is to provide a comprehensive explanation of the processing of your personal data and your rights to your personal data collected by BiNatUr.

According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right to know for what purposes and how your personal data is processed and get copy of your personal data being processed. You also have the right to ask us to correct your personal data if any of your personal data we process is inaccurate or faulty. If we correct your personal data at your request, we are obliged, as far as possible, to notify all those to whom the data was previously disclosed of the correction. In addition, you have the right to delete your personal data, object and restrict its processing at any time.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, the Finnish Data Protection Ombudsman: tietosuoja(at)om.fi.
