Environmental Goods and Services in Trade (VITALI)

The study carried out by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) and ETLA Economic Research as part of the Government Plan for Analysis, Assessment and Research reviewed existing Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) listings finding many of them outdated due to rapid technological and scientific advancements. The study proposes a new draft assessment framework to help create EGS listings.

A new EGS-list (EGFI24) was created and used in a database-analysis on production and trade in Finland. Finnish companies have a slight comparative advantage in EGS but the potential is not fully utilized. The Energy transition, Circular economy and Nature-based Solutions offer significant opportunities for sustainable growth. Finnish companies and industrial organizations are generally positive towards EU environmental programs and recognise their own role in mitigating the Triple Planetary Crisis. New environmental customs codes are needed to accurately define EGS, to separate them from harmful products and to avoid underestimating the "green economy."
