The Habitat Bank of Finland, originating in a Helsinki Challenge awarded idea "Biodiversity NOW!", is an umbrella project analysing, developing and piloting the principles of ecological compensation in practice.
The project aims to provide science based understanding and guidelines for a new market-based mechanism for biodiversity conservation, to complement the existing policy instrument mix. The new mechanism is urgently needed, as the existing instruments have not halted biodiversity loss.
More information on the research consortium can be found at the Habitat Bank.

In collaboration with business, administration and NGO's the interdisciplinary team of the Habitat Bank is developing and testing the mechanism. The experts of natural science, social science, economics and law will explore and analyse the feasibility of different features of the ecological compensation mechanism together with practitioners.
Part of the project is to explore the need for an intermediary between actors demanding and supplying ecological compensations. In addition, the Habitat Bank project will develop the methodology and metrics to measure biodiversity loss and compensations.
