Concepts of nutrient cycling in archipelago and coastal areas (Saaristoravinne)

There are many identified concrete problems associated with the collection and processing of toilet waste in the public toilets of the archipelago and the coastal area, which pose challenges for the service providers of public sanitation solutions, the inhabitants of the archipelago and tourism. The objective of the Saaristoravinne project is to develop the current practices of public toilets in the archipelago and the coastal area to support the nutrient cycle in cooperation with stakeholders. In the project, the operating environment is developed by finding out solutions suitable for the archipelago region for the utilization of nutrient-rich fractions. The biogas reactor type and pyrolysis suitable for the treatment of separately collected toilet waste are tested. The solutions support both nutrient recycling and energy self-sufficiency.

Ministry of the Environment has assisted the project with 157 560 euros from the Ahti program.
